Rinca in Half a Day: a Working Timeline

• 06:30 — depart Labuan Bajo by speedboat, or wake already anchored off the island on a liveaboard.
• 07:30 — jetty, boardwalk, registration at Loh Buaya while the valley is still cool — watch for juvenile dragons beneath the boardwalk, which stay in trees and cover to avoid the adults.
• 07:45–09:30 — ranger-guided trek; dragons are most mobile before the heat pins them to shade.
• 09:45 — back aboard: swim stop at a nearby cove or push on to Padar for the midday slot.

Run in reverse for the quiet version: trek Rinca mid-afternoon after the fleet leaves, then anchor off Kalong for the bat exodus — the pairing that makes Rinca the backbone of day one on most overnight routes.

On the Crossing: Dolphins in the Rinca Channels

Keep eyes on the water during the crossing itself: dolphins ride bow waves in the Rinca channels often enough that our crews consider them a regular, not a bonus. Ashore, the bird list runs from orange-footed scrubfowl kicking their nest mounds to sulphur-crested cockatoos screeching over the ridge — a subspecies stronghold in this corner of Indonesia — on top of the Timor deer, water buffalo, wild boar and macaques that sustain the park’s apex predator.
