Padar has no pier: boats anchor in the northeast bay and tender you to the beach at the foot of the stairway, where rangers check park tickets before you climb. The climb itself is a built stairway of roughly 780–830 steps with rest platforms — most visitors reach the main viewpoint in 25–45 minutes, and the grade is moderate: heat and lack of shade are the real challenge, not the terrain. Speedboats out of Labuan Bajo reach the bay in a little over an hour; phinisi cruises usually position overnight nearby so guests walk up in the first light without a crossing that morning. The stairway runs one-way traffic at busy hours, and the full visit, beach to beach, takes about 90 minutes. The color difference in the three bays below is real, not a filter: biogenic white sand, white sand tinted by red foraminifera fragments, and darker volcanic sediment — the same chemistry behind Pink Beach on Komodo Island. For the dragons themselves, continue to Rinca — and meet the species in our Komodo dragon guide.
| Slot | Case for it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sunrise | Cool air for the climb, mist in the bays, the classic east-light photograph | The busiest window; requires overnighting nearby |
| Południe | Fits any day-trip loop | Hard heat, flat light on the ridges |
| Late afternoon | West light on the pink and white bays, thin crowds, golden savannah | Day boats must budget the run home; easiest from a liveaboard |
The famous frame is northwest from the upper platform, three bays fanned below — a wide lens (16–24 mm equivalent) takes it in one, while a short telephoto isolates the pink bay against the ridge. Haze builds with the heat, so the earlier the sharper. If the main platform is queued, the lower shoulders shoot nearly the same composition with elbow room; on the descent, turn around — the stairway itself against the bays is the second-best picture on the island. Pack one liter of water per person, sun protection with no shade assumed, grip-soled shoes for the dusty lower steps, and a light layer if you climb pre-dawn — the ridge catches wind. Leave drones stowed unless your operator has arranged the permit in advance.
