Why Sebayur Island Belongs on Your Komodo Itinerary

The most iconic Komodo destinations — Padar Island, Pink Beach, Manta Point — are spectacular, but they are also the busiest. Sebayur offers something different: quality without the queue.

The reefs surrounding Sebayur support a genuinely diverse range of marine life, including sea turtles, white-tip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, giant trevally, and occasional manta rays drifting through the channel. The water temperature stays warm year-round, and the sheltered bay on Sebayur Besar's western side makes for one of the most pleasant anchorages in northern Komodo.

Sebayur Island Field Guide

About Sebayur Islands

There are two Sebayur Islands in Komodo — Sebayur Besar (the big Sebayur Island) and Sebayur Kecil (the small Sebayur Island) — both located in the north of Komodo National Park. Although they are surrounded by the best dive sites in the park's northern region, the islands themselves do not belong to the park, so you won't be required to pay an entrance fee to visit them.

Sebayur is known as a heaven spot for divers, popular among destinations that offer underwater panoramas, and sits strategically close to famous dive spots on Flores Island such as Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, and Crystal Rocks.

How to Get There

Fly to Labuan Bajo (Komodo Airport) — roughly 2 hours from Jakarta and 1 to 1.5 hours from Surabaya, Denpasar, or Kupang. From the harbor, Sebayur Island is accessible by speedboat within an hour, or 1.5–2 hours by traditional boat.

There is no public transportation to Sebayur Island from Labuan Bajo harbor, so booking a tour package or chartering a boat in advance is the smoothest way to arrange the crossing.

Snorkeling, Diving, and Swimming

The underwater life around Sebayur is magnificent — healthy, colorful corals, clownfish, and surgeonfish swimming around the reefs, all visible through pristine clear water. Snorkeling and diving are the best ways to enjoy it.

Swimming is also safe here, as the current is not strong near the islands. With Komodo Luxury, snorkeling gear is included in the boat charter package, so you don't have to worry about bringing your own.

White-sand Beach with Clear Water

Sebayur's less-visited nature gives it a calm, relaxed feel. The white-sand beach is a perfect place to read a book, unwind, and release stress. During the dry season, the hills turn brownish, creating a contrasting golden-hour effect during sunset — a stunning place to end the day.

Spot Various Species of Fish

Marine life in Sebayur is rich with aquatic species. You can spot white-tip reef sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and snappers in this area, along with a vibrant array of reef fish and corals.

Final Thoughts

Sebayur's pristine water is perfect for swimming, its marine biodiversity invites snorkeling and diving, and the white-sand beach relaxes your mind and body. It is an ideal destination to unwind with a tropical atmosphere, away from the hustle of the city.
